Queen’s Birthday weekend gave us an long weekend (I think the British should follow the Kiwi’s in getting behind this holiday!) Big drive up to the top of the South Island took us about 9 hours. The plan was to bike 50kms of the Heaphy track and then turn round and come back. What we didn’t count on was nearly 1000m climb over the first 17kms and torrential rain which made the track resemble a water fall in many places. We stopped well short of our target but were rewarded with a night in a great little warm hut, were we tried to get all our gear dry. Think we heard Kiwi’s through the night, but could face going out into the rain. We cut the trip short but did go on a little ticky tour, visiting Fairwell spit and a couple of barren West coast beaches. Good trip, but I think I’ve got some unfinished business with the Heaphy track. Despite the weather and riding the toughest part of the track, what a ride! 87Kms of single track = mountain biking heaven.
